Penn State Berks Celebrates Engineers Week with a PLTW Design Contest! |

Engineering Design Contest for Pennsylvania PLTW High Schools! When: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 Where: Penn State Berks, Reading, PA. School Eligibility: Competition is open to all Project Lead The Way Pennsylvania high schools. Your school does not need to be certified to participate. PLTW schools may only send one team. Student Eligibility: Students must currently be enrolled in either IED or POE. Exception: If your school is on a block schedule, and your students have just completed either IED or POE, they are eligible to participate. Costs: All transportation, housing, and meal costs shall be borne by the supporting school/school district except that lunch shall be provided to contestants and PLTW teacher. For your convenience, a list of hotels near the campus can be viewed here. 1. Students and PLTW teacher must register online no later than 3 pm, Feb 8, 2008. Registration for the Design Contest is closed. 2. Schools may bring up to 5 current PLTW students and 1 PLTW teacher. Exception granted if your district requires more than one teacher as chaperone. 3. PLTW Teachers shall supply a PLTW laptop with Inventor 2008 and other software as required for their students. PLTW teachers shall also provide a Flash Drive for presentations (if required). Penn State Berks will supply all other materials necessary for the design contest. 4. Attending PLTW teachers may not assist students during the competition. 5. Awards will be presented in the following categories:
Judging: Attending PLTW teachers will be responsible for observing all teams and judging which high school team exhibits the Best Teamwork. Penn State Berks Engineering Faculty/Engineering students will be responsible for judging the Best Presentation. An outside panel of reviewers from Carpenter Technology will judge Best Design and Best Overall Solution.
Schedule: 8:00 am to 8:45 am (Optional) - Tour of the Penn State Berks Campus. Please notify me if your school wishes to participate. 9:00 am - Competition begins. All teams shall be given the same design problem and will work towards developing and presenting a solution. Students will be expected to design, sketch, build, test, and demonstrate a solution to the design problem. 11:30 am - Lunch provided 12:00 pm - Presentations of solutions begin. Teams are given a maximum of 10 minutes to present and demonstrate their solution to the panel. The facilitator will stop all presentations at the 10 minute mark. Presentation order shall be determined by random draw. 1:30 pm - Presentation of Awards and participant certificates and gifts. |
